Steps to Develop Essential Road Safety Skills

Staying safe while driving should be your number one priority when behind the wheel. Below are some steps each driver should take to help ensure their safety and the safety of others:

  • Always wear your seatbelt. Even if you aren't driving a far distance. Accidents can happen in an instance, even when you're close to home.
  • Maintain a safe following distance from the car in front of you. Stay about 3 seconds away in normal driving conditions and 6 seconds when driving in heavy traffic or inclement weather.
  • Constantly check your mirrors and look ahead to anticipate any danger headed your way. Check your rearview and side mirrors every 6-10 seconds.
  • Don't text and drive or participate in any other distracted driving actions while driving. Put your phone away and focus on the road.
  • Don't engage another driver who is displaying road rage or driving dangerously. Let them pass you and give them plenty of room.
  • Use turn signals when turning or making a lane change. This allows drivers to know your intentions and gives them time to react accordingly.
